Diagnostic Lab Work & X-Rays

Radiographs and blood work help us diagnose so many things that we cannot see going on inside your pet’s body. Think your dog may have eaten that wedding ring you are missing? Digital radiography produces images within minutes and gives us the capability to electronically transfer them to referral hospitals or specialists within seconds.

Patients with acute and chronic illnesses can benefit from our in-house laboratory services. We are equipped to provide fast, accurate test results for your pet. Most testing is complete within 30 minutes. Certain specialized testing, such as allergy panels and biopsy samples, which are sent to an outside laboratory, may take 3 to 5 business days for us to receive results.

Spay & Neuter

Spay and neuter is not only best for your pet’s health, but it is also the law. Spay and neuter surgeries are scheduled Monday through Friday.

We can spay or neuter your cat or dog as early as 12 weeks old. For some species the minimum age requirement will vary; for example, we recommend that for rabbits to be spayed or neutered they be at least 6 months old. Spaying and neutering your pet at a young age can help prevent certain infections and types of cancer later in life.

San Antonio city ordinance requires that all pets be spayed or neutered unless there is a medical reason preventing the surgery or unless you have paid an additional fee for a non-sterilized city license. San Antonio law demands that any cat staying outdoors be spayed or neutered. The owner of any female dog or cat who has a litter must have a litter permit and this permit only allows a pet to have one litter per year.

Microchipping

Microchipping is required by the City of San Antonio. Every pet must have a registered microchip. Southeast Animal hospital provides microchipping services that include enrollment and registration through HomeAgain®. A microchip is a tiny radio frequency chip about the size of a grain of rice that displays a number when it is scanned. The chip is implanted under the skin with a needle on the back of the neck. It is no more painful than any other injection your pet receives. Microchips are a permanent form of identification, but they are not a tracking device. Registering your pet’s new chip number is the most important task; when your pet is microchipped with our hospital, we take care of that for you. Found pets are brought into our hospital all the time to be scanned that have a chip, but no registered owner. If you have found a pet and need help getting him/her home again, you may use this website to search a universal database: https://www.aaha.org/petmicrochiplookup

Surgical Specialists

Southeast Animal Hospital provides many surgical services but sometimes it is necessary for us to call on the services of a board-certified surgeon. Texas Specialty Veterinary Services allows us to bring a specialist to your pet in our home. Your pet will be cared for before and after surgery by the veterinarian and technicians with which you and your pet are familiar, and the specialist surgeon will perform the surgery in our hospital’s surgery room. Some of the services offered by TSVS include:

  • Extracapsular cruciate repair
  • Tightrope cruciate repair
  • Splenectomy
  • Cleft palate repair
  • Femoral Head and Neck Ostectomy
  • Bone biopsy
  • Prophylactic Gastropexy

Ultrasound

Ultrasound allows us to see inside the body using high frequency sound waves. When x-rays do not give us enough information, Southeast Animal Hospital may enlist the help of SonoVet. SonoVet is a mobile veterinary service that brings the ultrasound unit to your pet in our hospital. Ultrasounds are non-invasive, painless and give us great details of organs, masses and other structures inside the body. We are usually able to receive diagnostic ultrasound reports within 24 to 48 business hours.

Some ways an ultrasound may benefit your pet:

  • Pregnancy
  • Masses on/within organs
  • Echocardiograms
  • Biopsies
  • Heart murmurs
  • Internal hemorrhaging
  • Help identify unknown disorders

Pet Boarding

Southeast Animal Hospital offers boarding to our established patients. Our boarding facilities are indoors and temperature controlled, so that your pet is always comfortable. We do our best to accommodate pets with special health concerns or medications. We walk dogs twice a day and move them into a clean kennel each morning. Cats are housed in a separate area of our hospital away from the dogs. We have spacious runs for large dogs, and we can house an inseparable set of pets together, so long as space permits. We also offer boarding to our guinea pig and rabbit patients.

Pet Grooming

Every pet needs a great bath or haircut, and we can help!  We groom both dogs and cats and will work with aggressive pets that have been asked not to return. Our hospital hours give you the flexibility to drop off your pet as early as 7:30 a.m. and pick it up in the evening before we close. Every bath includes a nail trim, ear cleaning and expressing the anal glands. Our groomer also offers breed specific hair styling and nail filing.
